Lukas Podolski will join Arsenal from Cologne this summer............

Germany striker Lukas Podolski will join Arsenal from Cologne for the start of next season for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old international began his career at Cologne in 2002 and joined Bayern Munich four years later before returning to his first club in 2009.
Podolski, who has 95 caps, said: "I'm so happy to be joining Arsenal and the Premier League. They are one of the top clubs in Europe with a huge history.
"There are many top-quality players at Arsenal and their style is fantastic." 

He added: "I have made this decision not against FC Cologne but because it is a great opportunity.

"This was not an easy decision for me at all, as Cologne, our fans and the city are something special for me."
The Poland-born forward, who had one year left on his contract, has scored 18 league goals so far this season for a side battling relegation, which is his best ever top-flight return.
He added: "I will always carry FC Cologne in my heart. We need to pool our strengths now and have to be fully focused on our survival in the Bundesliga."
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: "He is a top-class player, a very good finisher and a proven performer at club and international level. He is a very strong player and will provide us with good attacking options."
Arsenal are looking to add to their striking options. While although Robin van Persie has netted 28 to become the Premier League's leading scorer, their next highest scorer is Theo Walcott on eight goals. 

Podolski, who will link up with international team-mate Per Mertesacker in north London, played for Germany at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups and is set to be part of their squad at Euro 2012.
He has 43 goals from 95 appearances, putting him joint-sixth in Germany's all-time list despite often playing on the left.
Wenger said: "That is a phenomenal record and just shows his quality as a player."
Cologne's executive chairman Claus Horstmann said: "Cologne were prepared to extend Lukas Podolski's contract on the basis of a competitive offer. Nonetheless, this early transfer decision offers scope and planning security for the next season.
"Lukas has left a mark on FC Cologne's reputation and we feel the need to thank him for numerous great football experiences."

  Manchester City host rivals Manchester United on Monday night knowing victory would give them the edge in the Premier League title race.
  United travel to Etihad Stadium with a three-point lead over their rivals, but have an inferior goal difference.
  City kept the pressure on the leaders with a 2-0 win over Wolves last weekend as United drew 4-4 with Everton.
  
  
  Victory for City would put them level with Sir Alex Ferguson's men with just two games remaining.
  United have the edge in the head-to-heads, having won 67 of the 161 matches between the two clubs with City coming out on top in 44.
  However, the last time the two sides met in the league, City thumped United 6-1 - the Red Devils' heaviest-ever Premier League defeat and the first time they had conceded six goals at Old Trafford since 1930.
  "This is the derby game of all derby games," said Ferguson. "It is our city rivals and that makes everyone step up a notch in terms of anticipation. 
  
  "Our fans will look upon it [a possible league win] as a special one because they are our fans' most bitter rivals, there is no getting away from that. It means everything to the fans and I think going into work on Tuesday morning will be the most important day of their lives for both sets of supporters.
  "People are brought up through their grandfathers, their great grandfathers, their grandmothers to be what they are. You can't change a family's traits. It is steeped in the blood of these supporters and they will give everything to win this game on Monday."
  With so much at stake, City manager Roberto Mancini is hoping that this derby will pass peacefully.
  
  "It is a football day and not war and, for this reason, I hope all supporters will enjoy the game," said Mancini, who admitted he is worried about the day.
  "The United game is like a final and you can lose these games; you are not playing against a small team."
  While City's home record is favourable, with 21 wins in their last 22 matches in the top flight, the Blues have not scored at home against United in the league for nearly five years.
  But recent form suggests City are favourites. Roberto Mancini's men have won their last three games, scoring 13 goals in the process.
  United, meanwhile, have taken just four points from a possible nine, which included losing a 4-2 lead to draw with Everton at Old Trafford.
  But if United win and then triumph in their two remaining games, they will finish with 92 points to equal their best Premier League tally, achieved when they won the title in 1994.
  City visit Newcastle next after the derby clash and then face QPR at home, while United take on Swansea at Old Trafford before finishing with a trip to Sunderland.
  
  

Roy Hodgson and England: Talks start at Wembley with FA

 Roy Hodgson arrived at Wembley on Monday afternoon for talks with the Football Association over the England manager's job.

The West Brom boss, who was meeting a four-man panel, is expected to be appointed within 48 hours.
The FA says the 64-year-old is the only person it has approached about succeeding Fabio Capello.

He said he would "be delighted" to manage England, in a BBC Sport interview before the FA's approach.

Hodgson has extensive international experience, having managed Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and Finland, and domestic teams in Sweden, Italy and England.
FA chairman David Bernstein said: "Roy is the only manager we have approached and we remain on course to make an appointment within the timescale we set out."
The four-man panel which will decide who takes over from Capello are Bernstein, FA general secretary Alex Horne, FA director of football development Sir Trevor Brooking and managing director of Club England Adrian Bevington.
Bernstein approached West Brom on Saturday and was given permission to speak to Hodgson, who is likely to be appointed on a long-term basis.
It is expected any contract will cover the three tournaments up to and including Euro 2016, at which point he will be two months short of his 69th birthday.
Hodgson's contract with West Brom ends on 30 June. 

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp had been heavily linked with the job ever since Capello left the post in February, but the FA has decided to discuss the position with Hodgson.

It is understood the FA's main concern about Redknapp was whether he shared their vision for the National Football Centre in Burton, designed as a £100m centre of excellence for coaching.
The FA felt Hodgson would be more willing to lead from the front on that issue.
On Friday, BBC Radio 5 Live's Pat Murphy spoke to Hodgson about the England job, and put it to the West Brom manager that the FA was expected to make a move for Capello's successor this week.
"It's news to me," Hodgson said. "I shall just watch like everyone else interested in football to see who the next England manager will be.
"I don't what the plans are of the FA, as I've said all along. They've got a job to do. I'm sure they have looked into the sort of candidates that they consider potentially right for the job.
"No doubt, if you say next week, we'll find out which candidate they have plumped for."
Murphy told Hodgson he "ticked a lot of the boxes", and the West Brom manager replied: "I don't know about that. It's nice of you to say so, but I'm sure there's lots of other people who tick a lot boxes as well."
Hodgson, who had a disappointing time at Liverpool last season, has steered West Brom to mid-table in the Premier League.
In total, he has managed 18 teams either at domestic or international level, including two spells as Inter Milan boss.
And Albion chairman Jeremy Peace remains hopeful he will stay on at the Hawthorns.
Peace said: "Roy has done a fantastic job over the past 15 months and the fact the FA wants to discuss the England role with him is testament to that. 

"However, we have emphasised to Roy how much we would like him to remain as our head coach and continue his major contribution to our project at the Hawthorns as we look to establish ourselves as a Premier League club.
"Everyone here has an excellent working relationship with him and he is immensely popular with our supporters."
England have two fixtures before their Euro 2012 opener against France on 11 June, with friendlies planned against Norway on 26 May and Belgium on 2 June.
Stuart Pearce - who is in charge of both the England Under-21 squad and the Team GB Olympic set-up - is currently in temporary control of the national side and oversaw a 3-2 friendly defeat by the Netherlands at Wembley last month.
Pearce said he would be prepared to lead the team into Euro 2012 and stated earlier this week that he could name the squad on or around 10 May if no new manager was in place by that date.

Pep Guardiola to end reign as Barcelona coach in summer...........

 Pep Guardiola will stand down as Barcelona manager at the end of the season after deciding not to renew his rolling one-year contract.

The 41-year-old, who was appointed in 2008 and has led the Catalan club to 13 trophies, will be succeeded by current assistant Tito Vilanova.
Barca look set to miss out to Real Madrid in La Liga and were knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea.
"The reason is simple: four years is enough," said Guardiola.
"I'm drained and I need to fill up. The demand has been very high and a manager must be strong." 

It is understood the former Spain international will take a year away from football after relinquishing his duties to Vilanova.

"At the beginning of December I announced to the chairman that I was seeing the end of my era at Barcelona," Guardiola continued.
"Time has taken its toll - I rise each day and don't feel the same. I am going with the understanding that I have done my duty.
"You can only recover by resting and getting away from everything. It would have been a bad idea to continue. Perhaps it would not have gone wrong but I have the perception that it would. It is my time to go.
"Now we are out of the two main competitions it is a good time to announce this. I did not want to continue with the confusion.
"I want to thank my players who are responsible for everything that has happened here. I don't want to manage at the moment."
Guardiola was speaking at a news conference attended by many of his players and received rapturous applause at the end. 

The likes of captain Carles Puyol, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas looked emotional as their coach announced his departure.

Vilanova was not among the favourites to replace Guardiola once it emerged he would be leaving.
But Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta said: "We've always said that if the team needs players, we look at home first. What do we have here at home? Tito.
"We chose Tito because he represents the idea and the image. He has commitment and personality."
Guardiola added: "Barca is making a great choice. He's very capable. The players know him. Even though I won't be here physically - if Tito needs me, I'm here."
Guardiola is the most successful coach in Barca history, with three league titles, two Champions Leagues and a Copa del Rey among his haul.
He has overseen the rise of three-time world player of the year Lionel Messi, Xavi and Iniesta, while signing Fabregas from Arsenal.
Guardiola was particularly close to Messi - describing him as "the best ever" player - while the Argentina forward suggested Guardiola was the main factor behind Barca's recent success.

Fernando Torres: Chelsea strength can defeat Barcelona

• Chelsea striker Fernando Torres believes the London club's battling qualities can help overcome Barcelona in their Champions League semi-final.
  Chelsea hold a 1-0 first leg advantage going into the return tie at the Nou Camp on Tuesday.
  "It is clear that Barcelona are a step ahead of all other clubs," Torres told Uefa's website. 
   They have reached the last five semi-finals. But this is football: the best team doesn't always win."
  Torres has highlighted the influence of Spain team-mates Xavi and Andres Iniesta for Barcelona and says that Chelsea cannot get drawn into a game in which they are chasing the ball against a side renowned for their passing ability.
  "Xavi and Iniesta are players who dictate the rhythm of the game," added Torres. "When you play against them, you need to know that they are guiding the game.
  "Many teams who play Barcelona think that you have to steal the ball from them, but I don't think that's possible.
  "You have to use different weapons against them. If you want to steal the ball, you won't manage it and you'll get tired, and then create more space for your opponent."
  Barcelona have not won a Champions League tie the three times they have trailed from the first leg and Chelsea coach Roberto di Matteo insists his side will be trying to score and not just try to protect their slender lead.

 NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 24 – President Mwai Kibaki has reiterated his pledge for a peaceful handover of power after the next General Election.

While addressing Parliament on Tuesday afternoon, he said the next president should be a visionary leader with the capacity to pursue development and sustain Vision 2030 whose foundation had been laid.
“I also assure Kenyans of a smooth transition to the new leadership that they will elect in the forthcoming general election; that leadership must have the capacity to build and sustain on our vision 2030,” the president said in his State of the Nation address.
Kibaki urged Kenyans to remain calm even as the country pursues the possibility of creating a local mechanism to deal with aspects of international crimes that occurred during the 2008 post-election violence.
The Head of State told Parliament that while post election violence victims deserved justice those accused also deserved a fair and legal hearing.
“I call on Kenyans to remain calm even as we pursue the option of having a local mechanism to deal with any international crimes,” he said adding that the matter must also not be politicised.
In March, the committee of legal experts formed to advise the government following the confirmation of charges against four Kenyans by the International Criminal Court proposed the appointment of an independent ‘special prosecutor’ for all the post-election violence cases, including those involving the four ICC accused.
Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, former head of Public Service Francis Muthaura, Eldoret North MP William Ruto and radio presenter Joshua arap Sang will be tried by the ICC for crimes committed during the 2008 post-election violence.
He said that the government had put in place the necessary institutions and measures to regulate free, fair and credible elections adding that any hindrances and obstacles will be dealt with decisively and promptly.
“We are increasing the number of security officers. Moreover, massive civic and voter education will be conducted on the New Constitution and the electoral system,” said the president.
The president said that the government had purchased 12,900 acres of land to resettle the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and forest evictees at a cost of Sh3.9 billion.
He said that the Ministry of Special Programmes had also been allocated Sh4.4 billion for construction of houses and purchase of food and non-food items for the IDPs.
He appealed to political parties to make an effort of having a national outlook saying that the country’s democracy had come of age and needed parties that are ideologically driven and have a national character.
Kibaki whose re-election in 2007 was bitterly contested by Prime Minister Raila Odinga announced that the government will hold a national conference on peaceful elections in August and appealed to MPs and other leaders to engage in the District and County Peace Forums in the build up to the conference.
He insisted that politicians ought to be awake to the fact that political competition should be guided by the fact that the interests of the nation were more important than those of individuals or parties.
“I call upon all leaders and Kenyans to embrace peace and reconciliation as we move towards the General election. As the elections draw closer, leaders must display patriotism and statesmanship… Kenyans must observe the rule of law before, during and after the elections,” the president advised.
