(Raphael Okello Bandari Captain)
The coastal Division One derby pitting Bandari FC and Magongo Rangers at
the refinery grounds in Mombasa was marred by repeated scenes of crowd
trouble as Magongo Rangers fans fiercely objected the decisions of match
officials in a match that ended 3-1 in favor of Bandari.
The drama unfolded right in the faces of senior FKF officials led by Mombasa NEC member Hussein Terry, Doris Petra and Elly Mukolwe who were strategically positioned to witness the would be grand Mombasa derby.
It was so bad that the match had to be twice stopped and the first half was played for close to one and a half hours forcing officials from both sides including FKF officials to intervene and calm down the agitated fans. Though they (FKF officials) also got their fair share of heavy coastal words.
The first trouble came when Bandari was awarded a penalty that raged the fans who thought it was unwarranted. But after a few minutes of stoppage, play resumed and Raphael Okello stepped up to slot home the opener with ten minutes played. Minutes later, Rangers were also awarded a penalty that made things equal.
But trouble was back in the 20th minute when Bandari scored the second after Macharia was served a long ball from Bandari’s third but the fans had otherwise thoughts claiming the goal was scored from an offside position. They stormed the pitch again forcing play to be stopped for over 20 minutes.
But Bandari did not stop, they kept the fire coming and pumped in the third goal just before half time courtesy of Shabaan Kenga.
The second half was quiet but the home team could not match the form of the former premier league team as the fixture ended 3-1 in the favor of Bandari. This only invited more angry reaction from the fans who mobbed the referees beating up the first assistant referee forcing officials to call for security reinforcement as police joined to escort the match officials to safety.
Bandari FC officials condemned the unruly behavior from the fans and called on FKF to act swiftly by banning the stadium and disciplining Rangers for failing to contain their fans.
