MIKE BWAX NEWS - The new managers of Coro FM, the Kikuyu language wing of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation are mismanaging the station, risking sending it the fate of the now defunct Metro FM, sources told the Jackal News, identifying them as the latest crop of unqualified managers running a radio channel in the troubled KBC.
Trouble started the replacement of Jane Mumbi with Karanja Kamau and Jacinta Njeri Maina as her deputy. The pair holds Bachelor of Education degrees, sources told the Jackal News. “The new appointments were not transparent, especially deputy head. So after the replacement, that was the end of team work,” the source said.
Making matters worse, Mumbi was replaced while in hospital with her ailing child, several sources explained, complaining the impunity at the state broadcaster where workers downed tools early this year demanding wide ranging reforms, but it appears the management is reluctant to bring changes. “Announcers are not consulted for the changes; instead they receive text messages about these crucial changes from the two teachers.”
After Mumbi's exit, commercial content in the once successful radio station, dropped significantly. “Coro FM was the leading station in terms of revenue collection, but now that is no-longer the case and people are disgruntled,” the source explained.
“There is a guy by the name, Munyeki who is a paid artist, but the irony is that is he is more involved in decision making more than even the permanent employees owing to the fact that he is close to the deputy head Jacinta Njeri. Munyeki attends meetings with fans and bad mouths the Coro team a complaint that has been raised by some fans themselves.”
“The station has seen the worst of victimization since the take over from the two. Case in point, David Njaaga aka Wamari, who is a star, has been shuffled across shifts from mid-morning -- where Jacinta Njeri said she cannot work with him -- to drive show where Nyoxx also said she cannot work with him in a clear effort to frustrate him. In a more recent incident he was pulled off the late night show indefinitely by Karanja for no apparent reason, leaving him hanging in the corridors,” the source explained.
Can someone explain when a studio became a classroom to be headed by teachers? “If nothing is done urgently with regard to management of Coro FM and especially with Sabina Wanjiru's exit next month, we will see its doors close jus as we did with Metro FM. listeners are wondering who will come to Coro FM’s rescue?” the source added.
The complaints come weeks after a parliamentary committee recommended the disbandment of the KBC Board of Directors and the vetting of top managers who stand accused of running Africa’s oldest broadcasting house to the dogs .
