Arsène Wenger is thrilled that Carl Jenkinson’s promising start to the season has resulted in the defender winning his first England cap.
Jenkinson
was brought on with 16 minutes to play as Roy Hodgson's side were
beaten by a Zlatan Ibrahimovic-inspired Sweden on Wednesday night. Jack Wilshere was also in action in Stockholm, making his return to the international fold after 17 months.
Wenger
is relieved both players came through the game unscathed, and says
making his international bow will do wonders for Jenkinson’s self
belief.
“I’m massively pleased for Carl because he had a good
start to the season and was rewarded last night,” Wenger told Arsenal
Player. “That will hopefully boost his confidence as well.
“I’m
very happy. It was quite an interesting game. England did not get the
result, but for me they played well in big parts of the game. There were
a lot of positives in that game for England.”
The England pair were not the only two Arsenal players representing their country in midweek. Playmaker Santi Cazorla
travelled to Panama with Spain - though, to Wenger's relief, the
midfielder did not feature as the world champions ran out 5-1 winners.
“I believe he didn’t need games. He was overloaded with games so on that front I was happy that he got a little breather.
“It
is not a complete breather because 20 hours travelling is of course not
what we want. It’s the advantage and the disadvantage of being called
up in a squad. At least he didn’t get injured and hopefully will recover
before Saturday.”
