Miss World Kenya 2012 Shamim Nabil Comes Close But Loses Out on Title

Miss World Kenya 2012, Shamim Nabil
Miss World Kenya 2012 Shamim Nabil may not have won either the overall title nor the continental one at this year’s Miss World beauty pageant which was held in Ordos, China but she has walked away having won the hearts of many and come as close as ever to scooping bragging rights which have unfortunately eluded Kenya since the country sent beauty Yolanda Masinde as it’s first contestant back in 2000.
Shamim defied all odds to make it to the top-15 semi finalists out of over 115 contestants from across the world and remain as only one of two African beauties left in the race for global supremacy, alongside South Sudan’s Atong Demach who would later on clinch the ‘Continental Beauty Queen’ title.
This was South Sudan and Nepal’s very first time to send contestants to the event which was broadcast to millions across the globe. South Sudan’s Atong Demach had previously won the Miss Earth title in 2010. Kenya bowed out with the likes of the United States and the Netherlands who had also last placed anywhere in the top 30 back in 2010.
Kenya was last crowned ‘Continental Beauty Queen’ in 2000, with the title belonging to Yolanda Masinde. Before that, the country boasted the title thrice before; (in 1990) Aisha Lieberg, (in 1988) Diana Neilor and (in 1984) Khadija Adam Ismail, earning us a joint 12th place overall continental clinch with West African neighbours Nigeria.
Miss World Kenya 2012 had a surprise placing of 4th runner up in the category ‘Beauty With a Purpose’ which was awarded to Miss World India, Vanya Mishra. Other placements which Shamim managed were in the top 46 finalists of the ‘Top Model’ category and grabbing a top 40 slot in the ‘Beach Fashion’ category.
Miss Uganda Phiona Bizzu co-won the Penalty Shoot Out crown in the Sports and Fitness category with Sweden’s Sanna Jinnedal. The other African country which placed was Nigeria (the top 30 quarter-finalists).
Interesting to note however were allegations of bias as China bagged her second title, through Miss World China PR Yu Wenxia,  who was crowned the fairest of them all on home soil with observers saying the home advantage was overwhelming as the 2012 Miss World edition came to its culmination on Saturday the 18th of August 2012.
