Olympic champion Asbel Kiprop and Silas Kiplagat eased to the Semi
finals of the 1500m after finishing third in their respective Round One
heats in the ongoing games in London but Chepseba Nixon failed to
qualify in heat three.
After leading throughout the race, Chepseba miscalculated his steps immediately after the bell as his lead was cut out on the final lap. It got worse for Chepseba who tripped in final 200m.The trip slowed him down and despite a powerful late kick, he finished 10th with a time of 3:42.29 and failed to make it through to the Semis.
Saudi Arabia’s Shaween won the second heat 3:39.42 with pre race favorite Silas Kiplagat coming fourth with a time of 3:39.79.
Kiprop posted a time of (3:36.59) coming behind Makhloufi Taoufik of Algeria 3:35.15 and Ethiopia’s Gebremedhin Mekonnen (3:36.56). With his traditional long strides, Kiprop who had been sandwitched and closed in n the final stretch produced a powerful final kick to qualify for the semis.
The top six finishers in each race qualify for the semi finals on Sunday.
