Wenger - Arteta plays a very intelligent role

Arsène Wenger has praised Mikel Arteta for curbing his attacking instincts for the good of the team this season.

The Spaniard has been deployed in a deeper role in the opening three games of the campaign, and has quickly formed an understanding with Abou Diaby and Santi Cazorla.

While they drew the plaudits for their impressive performances in the 2-0 win against Liverpool, Wenger believes Arteta’s contribution was crucial.

“He didn’t get the credit Diaby or Cazorla received, but on the day I felt he was outstanding and played a very efficient, intelligent role,” he told the Official Matchday Programme.

“He allowed Diaby to go forward a lot and played a very important part in our win.”

Arteta has thrived in a more defensive position since his arrival at the Club, and Wenger says his understanding of the game is one of his main qualities.

“He is a winner and he does what it takes to win, it’s as simple as that. If he sees that he has to sit to allow us to be efficient, he will do it,” he said.

“If he needs to push forward, he will do it just because he wants to win. That’s why I made him vice captain.”
